Welsh Springers are medium-sized dogs. They have a rich red and white coat and freckles. Males typically weigh 50-60 pounds, and females weigh 40-50 pounds. They are active and need plenty of exercise. Our Welshies love nothing better than to go for walks and hikes with us. When we pick up the leashes, they are ready to go!
While they are great tail-waggers with people that they know, Welsh Springers are good watch dogs and will bark at intruders. They are watch dogs, but not guard dogs. Welsh Springers have great noses and strong hunting instincts. As a breed, they were developed to work close to the hunter, within gun range, flushing and retrieving birds and other small game. Unlike some other spaniel breeds, they have not been separated into different hunting and show types. Consequently, Welshies love to work and hunt....plus they have a coat that is not hard to maintain.
Besides hunting, Welsh Springers have fun with you doing other sports. They love hiking, swimming, going for walks and fetching a ball. Welshies enjoy competing in companion dog sports such as dog agility, rally, obedience, tracking, even dock diving. With their excellent noses, they are naturals for the newer dog sports of nosework and barn hunts. Welshie owners have found that their friendly and gentle dispositions are ideal for therapy dog work. An important aspect of our breeding program emphasizes breeding for highly biddable dogs so they can be easily trained for these activities. |
